What is the perfect temperature for your home?
We all have our go-to temperatures for our home, but here’s what the experts have to say about it. The World Health Organisation states that 18’C is the perfect home temperature for a well-dressed and healthy household. During the winter, The Energy Saving Trust state that anywhere between 18’C and 21’C is a suitable home temperature. Both organisations believe that 18’C is the ideal temperature for your heating while you are asleep.
However, you should always heat your home according to the age and health of the people in your household. The World Health Organisation suggest 20’C for the old, young and unwell, and for healthy adults- whatever you feel is most comfortable.
If you have a young child or a baby, lullabytrust.org.uk advise that you heat the room of a newborn to 16 – 20’C.
The temperature of your home if you are elderly can be extremely important to your health. Living in a temperature less than 9’C could lead to hypothermia, and anything above 24’C increases the risk of strokes and heart attacks. For the elderly, the main living area should be set at 21’C, and the rest of the home at 18’C.
I’m going on holiday, do I need to leave my heating on?
If you’re going away on holiday during the summer, we advise that you turn your heating off unless you have pets at home or you are going away for an extended period of time. This will minimise the risk of mould or mildew.
At any other time of the year, only leave your heating on if there is a risk of freezing. To prevent this, set your temperature stat at around 5’C.
Can I save money by changing my room temperature?
According to thisismoney.co.uk, you can save around £80 per year if you turn down your heating by a mere one degree. If you need to save some money this year – it might be worth giving a lower temperature a try.
